Cooperative Homes
In co-op housing, there is no landlord. Instead, residents (along with hired staff) work together to maintain the co-op, finances, and solve problems that arise. Champlain Housing Trust’s Cooperative Housing Program has six co-ops in the greater Burlington area, with 115 units of member housing.
In co-op housing, resident members work together to maintain the management of the co-op through a Board of Directors and committees that address finance, legal, buildings and grounds, member selection, social and communications, and more.
Each resident member participates within the co-op at least 6 to 10 hours per month. Without the efforts of each resident member, co-op housing does not work.
As a resident member your participation can include:
- Serving on the board
- Participating on a committee
- Performing chores and other co-op jobs
Co-op housing isn’t for everyone, but it’s ideal for people who want to be involved with their neighbors in an intentional affordable housing community.
