Education & Counseling
CHT's HomeBuyer Education Program offers education and counseling to create and support successful, long-term homeowners. Workshops and counseling are offered at HomeOwnership locations in Burlington and St Albans.
Download the HomeOwnership Center orientation for an introduction to all of our services and programs! The Orientation is not required to sign up for the HomeBuyer Workshop or Shared Equity Informational Meeting.
The Homebuyer Education Workshop is a comprehensive 7 1/2 hour course covering the A-to-Z of the home buying process. HomeOwnership staff and home buying professionals such as lenders, attorneys, realtors, and home inspectors will help you understand the basics of the home buying process and give you tips on how to successfully negotiate that process. Workshops happen at least once a month and twice during busy Spring and Summer months. The workshops are offered in both Burlington and St Albans.
To sign up you must complete a workshop registration, customer service agreement and pay a $75 NON-REFUNDABLE fee.

One-one-One Counseling sessions with a HomeOwnership Counselor happen after you attend the workshop. Counseling can help you understand and prepare for the responsibilities of owning a home and focuses specifically on your situation. The counseling session can address home buying obstacles with an action plan as well as identify resources available to you. It is interesting to note that with the many troubles people face in today's market, recent studies indicate that people who received pre-purchase education are far less likely to be in trouble with their mortgages and even less likely to face foreclosure.
Upon completion of the workshop and counseling session you will receive a homebuyer education completion certificate that meets the education requirements for FHA, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, BHA, VSHA, NeighborWorks® America, and USDA Rural Development and many local portfolio loan products.
Post Purchase and Additional Services, our goal is not to simply help you just buy a home but to help sustain the gain for your long term successful ownership of that home. HomeOwnership Center staff are available to meet with you after you purchase to see how things are going and what challenges you may be encountering as a new homeowner. Counselors are available to discuss credit issues, money management and more. CHT also offers auxiliary workshops and groups on topics such as Filing Taxes for Homeowners, How to Make your Home Energy Efficient, Home Maintenance, Financial Fitness, Refinancing and Avoiding Predatory Loans.
If you have missed a housing payment or even think you might, CHT's Homeownership Center offers Delinquency Intervention and Foreclosure Prevention counseling. If you get behind in your housing payments, Homeownership Counselors can work with you and your lender to get you back on track and to prevent foreclosure.
