HomeOwner University (HOU) offers a wide array of classes to help homeowners achieve financial and housing stability to be a happy homeowner. CHT staff and local area experts instruct classes on topics such as managing finances, building equity, home maintenance and protecting your asset (the home).

Announcing the Fall Semester!  CHT’s next HomeOwner University is scheduled to run from September 15–October 29.

Working with a Contractor

Monday, September 15, 6:00–7:30 pm (Virtual)

D-I-Y projects in your home have a place, but occasionally home repair projects require a professional. Everyone has heard at least one Contractor “horror story.” This class will help you learn how to find and identify quality Contractors. It will provide information so you can craft a solid contract. It will explain project management as well as general tips and ideas to help you avoid the horror story.

Refinancing Your Home

Refinancing your home is big decision. It’s important to consider all the variables to make the best choice. This class will provide tips and techniques to help you weigh out whether refinancing is right for you. Have you ever wondered what your “personality type” is when it comes to money? Have you considered how your spending (or saving!) is related to how you approach the world? Join us to gain a deeper understanding of your money habits and attitudes. This class explores the emotional and mental factors that influence your financial decisions. Every personality type has strengths – learn how to harness yours! We’ll discuss how to use your natural tendencies to your advantage, share strategies on recognizing your personal spending triggers, and provide tools for building a healthier relationship with money.

Savvy Saving & Investing

Saving and investing are very important parts of being a successful homeowner. This class will review some strategies that work, including using CDs, retirement and education specific accounts, as well as savings for housing needs. This class will help you identify the reasons to have a healthy savings plan. It will define and explain different types of saving and investing accounts as well as how you develop a plan that works for you.

Home Maintenance Skills: Hands On

This hands-on in person class is an introduction to many basic repairs that can help you keep your home in tiptop condition. Does it feel impossible to navigate interactions with your neighbors? Have you ever wondered if the people next door have lost their minds? This class will take a look at different communication styles, boundaries, and boundary disputes! With relevant information for single family homeowners as well as those living in associations, we will explore how to create successful communities while still respecting and celebrating our differences.

This class will examine reasons for having a will and what happens if you don’t. This class will help you understand the steps to setting up a legal will and how you could use a trust to help ensure your wishes are met. It is also a way to save your family or friends money, time and paperwork. The class will define what is estate planning is and why you need a plan.

Enhanced Life Estate Deed, Advanced Directives & Power of Attorney (POA)

Instructors: Grace Pazdan & Leah Burdick (Vermont Legal Aid)

Planning for end-of-life decisions can be complex, let CHT and Attorneys from Vermont Legal Aid to make it esier. In this class you will learn about how to use an Enhanced Life Estate Deed to provide for real estate to be passed to heirs without going through Probate Court. The class will cover how to create an Advanced Directives to outline your wishes for medical treatment at such a time as you are unable to make those decisions and how to use a Power of Attorney to give someone authority to take care of your legal or financial affairs.
